Welcome to our first edition of the RockIt Times! Spending quality
time playing and interacting with our children is one of the most important jobs
that we, as parents and caregivers, can have. We are setting a strong foundation
for which our children can grow and flourish - mentally, physically, and emotionally. Each
month, the RockIt Times will bring you a few fun activities that you can do to
enhance your playtime. We even include a fun treat you can make together and enjoy!
All of our activities are geared towards preschool age children, however,
be sure to include your older children in the fun! I know that my 11 year old
son loves to "help" his 4 year old little brother (help = doing the
activities himself with a good excuse for participating). It is also a great way
for an older sibling or playmate to role model for a younger child, making them
feel more important and valued! This month, join us for some fun with our
spring time friends, caterpillars and butterflies! Now is the time to enjoy all
the energy and rebirth of spring. Have a rockin' day! Mari Peckham

Reading Rocks! Book Recommendations
| Rediscover spring with Eric Carle's modern classic, The
Very Hungry Caterpillar. Follow the very hungry journey of a delightful
little green caterpillar as he eats his ways through all sorts of foods on his
quest to become a beautiful butterfly. This is a great opportunity to talk
about eating healthy and different food groups with your little one! |

Talk about a fun book about bugs! I just picked up Big Bugs for my 4
year old and he absolutely adores it! Each page starts with a "clue"
to see if your little one can guess which bug might be hiding behind the next
page. When you are ready to check your answer, the right page opens out to reveal
the surprise answer - and an enormous and colorful popup version, and a great
"fact", of the bug in question. Whether you are looking for intellectual
or "insect"ual...this book gives both, with great colors and graphics,
sure to enhance you and your child's reading experience. |

Craft Of The Month Spring Butterflies Supplies:
- Food Coloring
- Coffee Filters
- Eye Dropper or Straws
- Wooden Clothes Pins
- Pipe Cleaner
- Color small bowls of water with food coloring.
- Using an eye
dropper or a straw, scatter drops of colored water onto round coffee filters and
watch the colors bleed and blend.
- While the filters dry, draw
eyes and body details on wooden clothes pins.
- Gather each coffee
filter up in the center and clip with the clothes pin.
- Make antenna
for each butterfly by inserting a pipe cleaner into the end of the clothes pin.
Twist it to secure. Bend the ends of the pipe cleaner to give it a realistic look.
- Decorate with sequins, glitter glue or small buttons, if desired.
-
To create a before and after exhibit: Glue
green pompoms to a large green leaf (with a bite gone, of course!) to make great
caterpillars! Return to top

Of The Month Caterpillar/Butterfly Play Supplies:
Have your child lie down on their scarf
and wriggle around like a caterpillar, trying to keep the scarf UNDER them. You
sing (Wheels on the Bus melody): The little caterpillar is wriggling around,
wriggling around, wriggling around. The little caterpillar is wriggling
around, all around our yard. Now, have your child roll into a ball
and cover their heads with the scarf. You sing: The little caterpillar
is building a cocoon, building a cocoon, building a cocoon. The
little caterpillar is building a cocoon right in our yard. Your child
can now pick up their scarf and fly with it! You sing: The pretty butterfly
is flying around, flying around, flying around. The pretty butterfly
is flying around, all around our yard. Return
